Welcome.

My name is Sonja McCuen, and I am so thankful you are here.

Welcome, in the name of a hesed hope, to a place of restoration, healing, and truth.

Hesed is the Hebrew word for God’s steadfast, loyal love. It is used throughout the Old Testament to describe His “sticky love” — a love that refuses to let us go. His love is the basis for the hope offered in our counseling sessions together.

You can find more about me, the services I offer, and answers to your questions on the site. Or, feel free to schedule an appointment with the link above.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Sonja.

testimonials

Sonja’s ability to take ordinary, everyday moments and gently peel back the layers of my heart cut through the surface and uncovered the truth of what I was actually wrestling with, continually guided me back to the hope and clarity found only in Christ. Her counsel was firmly rooted in Scripture and Spirit-led. After each session I felt a loosening of the bondage and shame that had gripped my heart, and in its place, a deeper anchoring to the truth and freedom found in Him.

I would recommend Sonja’s counseling to anyone and everyone. Sonja is faithfully abiding with Jesus and brings His word and His Spirit into all that she does! Through my time with her, I went from living paralyzed by fear to moving through my fears and toward faith-filled action.
COURTNEY
My time with Sonja truly changed my walk with God, not just how I view/interact with the Bible, but how I relate to Jesus Himself. She helped me shift from treating time in God’s Word as a checklist item to treasuring it as intimate time spent with the Lord who longs to meet with me. I loved watching what the Spirit did through our Scripture-rich homework. She gently guided me to uncover the roots of my emotional responses, identify misplaced desires, and discover the joy of truly knowing God's heart in the midst of them.
ALEX
I came to Sonja in a moment of desperation for growth. I was in a dark place in life and really seeking clarity in my emotions and a different way forward. The Lord prepared me to let go of what I needed to and Sonja helped me move through that process. After just 3 sessions, I had hope for the first time in a long time. I could get better. Sonja gave me a listening ear, compassion and the practical tools to feel better and BE better. I’ll always be grateful for her guidance in my life!

q&a:

Biblical counseling seeks to bring biblical solutions to the problems people face. It reaches the thoughts, intentions and longings of the heart. A biblical counselor seeks gospel-centered solutions. Ongoing conversations about the concerns people bring to counseling, along with Scripture, prayer and laser-focused homework primarily differentiate biblical counseling from secular counseling. Speaking the truth in love is the goal (Eph. 4:15).

There are many differences in psychology-based therapies and biblical counseling. Two significant distinctions:

  • Biblical worldview vs. secular worldview- As biblical counselors, we believe the Bible is the inerrant, all-sufficient Word of God. With His Word, His Spirit and His people, we have everything we need for godly living (2 Pet 1:3). Biblical counseling points people to Christ and the gospel. Ultimately, this is where hope is found. It is God-focused, not man-centered.
  • Redemptive relationship vs. therapeutic relationship- Biblical counselors practice the “One Another’s” of Scripture. Far from a cold and distant relationship, connection and spiritual intimacy happens naturally as God’s children open their hearts and share the fine china of their lives. Biblical counselors are deeply aware of their own sinfulness. Guidance and help are offered, as they walk alongside their counselees.

No. I chose to pursue a master’s degree at a school where I would be trained to counsel primarily from the Scriptures. In the state of Texas, a counselor cannot speak the name of God if a counselee does not bring Him up in a session. Counselors are bound by these laws and may lose their license. I wanted to speak the name of Jesus freely in my counseling, believing that hope is ultimately found in Him. As a member of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, I am held accountable to counsel according to high standards https://biblicalcounseling.com/positions/standards-of-conduct/

No, because I am not licensed with the state, I am unable to file insurance.

My preference is always to meet in person. I believe face-to-face facilitates the best counseling. But if distance prevents

you from meeting in our offices, we can meet online. I counsel women throughout the country online each week.
